Makarska
Makarska is a small middledalmatian town with about 14,000 inhabitants, 60 km away from Split and 140 km from Dubrovnik. It is situated at the foot of the mountain Biokovo (highest peak Sv. Jure 1762m, the third highest peak in Croatia), in a natural harbor between the two peninsulas, Osejava and St. Peter.
The town of Makarska is the center of the Makarska riviera, which consists of famous and beautiful small places, starting from Brela in the west coast all the way to Gradac in the east.
The entire Makarska riviera is actually a natural Croatian pearl known for its clean sea, long coastline and the most beautiful beaches of the Adriatic and beyond.
Makarska has had a rough time in history, a lot of times struggled with many conquerors.. It was inhabited as early as 8000 years ago, although her name was first mentioned in year 1502.
Makarska riviera has a climate characterized by long, hot summers and mild winters and the credit for this climate and lush vegetation belong to the mountain Biokovo which protects the city and the entire Riviera from the harsh continental climate. The sun shines more than 2750 hours per year.
Unavoidable and unforgettable are the sunsets observed at many benches on the beautiful Makarska waterfront. In summer, the main city square, Kačić square, is the main gathering place for young people and others. On this square, in the city centre, held many events, concerts and events. The famous Makarska summer festival attracts many tourists and visitors because of its interesting program and Summer Carnival.
In the past, Makarska was an important trading port, but today, this harbour is a shelter to a large ships, yachts and excursion boats. Daily, from Makarska harbor, goes ferry to Sumartin on the nearby island of Brač.
In Makarska, the visitors should certainly visit the museum of shells, known as the Malacological Museum. The museum is located in the Franciscan monastery and contains a large collection of shells from the Adriatic Sea and numerous species of tropical sea.
On the slopes of the mountain Biokovo, within the Nature Park, there is the Botanical Garden Kotišina. In this isolated part of nature there is more than 300 wild plant varieties, and the village Kotišina and its Botanical Garden attract tourists and visitors throughout the year.
The park in the southern part of the city, known as the peninsula of St. Peter, offers a beautiful long promenade and magnificent views of the city. On it, there are the remains of the old church, rocky beach and a lighthouse built in 1884.
Another peninsula, Osejava, is the largest city park and a popular walkway made of thick pine forests, diverse plant species, beautiful, large rocks and crystalline sea.
This peninsula, Osejava, abundant with intimate, small bays. A walk through this forest park will lead you to the most beautiful beach in this area, named Nugal.
